Many clients will talk to me about the charges that they have and they’ll ask, “Well should I go into, and possibly be offered, a first offender program?” The police officer may suggest it, may say that he would consider them to be eligible for it. That’s normally a very good idea.
In the first offender program, what you can do is you enter a plea and the punishment is reduced. Many times, it does not count as a conviction against your record, provided that you complete any of the requirements. Sometimes there may be a public service component to it. Sometimes there may be restitution. Once you’ve completed that, it is not a conviction that is on your record.
