What is the difference between a d/b/a and an alternate name?

It is important to understand that there is a small but important difference between a DBA (doing business as) and an alternate business name in New Jersey
A DBA is for non-New Jersey companies that want to do business in New Jersey, but their business name is already being used by a New Jersey company.
In New Jersey, if you want to use a more marketable name, then you register an alternate name. The procedure and price are nearly the same as a DBA, but you use a different form.
Consult an experienced attorney, because the forms can be very complicated.
