What is Megan’s Law?

Megan’s Law, in the context of criminal defense, is a penalty that’s imposed on crimes that are of a sexual nature. These crimes can be very serious, including sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, but they can also include crimes that are of a less significant nature, in terms of legal consequences. Improper touching, for instance, while it may seem relatively innocuous, would also carry a Megan’s component. What people need to know is that Megan’s Law, while obviously enacted to address a very real and very significant problem in our state and in the country, it imposes some very serious adverse consequences to people and to their livelihoods. It’s imperative when you’re evaluating a case that has a sexual component to it, whether it’s posting of an inappropriate photograph of someone else or one’s self, whether it’s an inappropriate toughing, whether it’s harassment that’s sexual in nature, it’s important that while it may seem relatively minor to you, that that Megan’s component has some very real consequences toward your livelihood.
