What is Operation Dry Water?

Law enforcement officials in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, as well as throughout the country are participating in Operation Dry Water between June 29 and July 1, 2018. This nationwide campaign aims to bring awareness and enforcement to individuals who operation boats under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, Fourth of July weekend has a tendency to have a spike in boating accidents across the country as a result of operating boats while intoxicated.

Along with the United States Coast Guard that helped launch this foundation, the New Jersey State Police will also be taking part in this crackdown. Alcohol is the leading factor in recreational boating deaths throughout the United States. In New Jersey, boating under the influence of alcohol can result in penalties that are just as significant as driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

The penalties for a BWI in New Jersey can include the following:

  • A first offense can result in a 1 year boating license suspension, a 3 month driver’s license suspension, a fine between $250 and $400, as well as additional surcharges
  • A second offense can result in jail time between 48 hours and 90 days, a boating license suspension for 2 years, a driver’s license suspension for 2 years, a fine between $500 and $1,000, and additional surcharges
